Russian Church criticizes West for disregarding Christian moral values

Interfax

Moscow, October 29, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church once again harshly criticized the West for what it sees as Western society's digression from moral values traditional for Christians.

"The values based on the religious moral ideal, which still remain traditional for most people on the planet, are systematically abused [in Europe], and new moral norms not rooted in tradition and running counter to human nature are being implanted among the masses," Bishop Hilarion of Vienna and Austria, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church's representation in Europe, said at an inter-religious conference in Ohrid, Macedonia.

Each believer in the West should think "about their future and the future of their progeny, their country, and their civilization," Bishop Hilarion said.

"Religious people should come to understand special responsibility that rests with them and enter into dialogue with a secular mindset, or, if dialogue with it is impossible, openly confront it," he said.
