Orthodox churches in metro Detroit to host Sunday Vespers in Lent

Council of Orthodox Christian Churches to conduct first of five services Feb. 21

DETROIT - The Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit (COCC) will conduct the first in its 2010 series of five Sunday Lenten Vespers services Feb. 21, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, at 6 p.m. at the Antiochian Orthodox Basilica of St. Mary, 18100 Merriman Road, Livonia. 

The Very Rev. Roman Star of St. Innocent of Irkutsk Orthodox Church, Redford, president of the Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood of St. John Chrysostom of Metropolitan Detroit and spiritual advisor to the COCC, will preside at the service, assisted by other members of the Clergy Brotherhood.
The Very Rev. Archimandrite Joseph (Morris), abbot of St. Gregory Palamas Greek Orthodox Monastery, Hayesville, Ohio, will be the homilist.
An inter-Orthodox choir under the direction of Victoria Kopistiansky, choir director at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Detroit, will sing during the service. 
The general public as well as Orthodox Christians is invited to attend the service.  Refreshments will be served afterward.  All proceeds will be used for Orthodox Christian Charities and COCC programs.  For further information, contact the president of the COCC, Robert Mitchell, at (313) 204-5103 or rmitc02@ameritech.net
The COCC conducts its series of Vespers services annually during the five Sundays of Orthodox Great Lent.  The remaining four services this year will be on: 
  • Feb. 28 at St. Stephen Dechani Serbian Orthodox Church, Warren;
  •  March 7 at St. George Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, Southfield; 
  • March 14 at SS. Peter and Paul Orthodox Cathedral, Dearborn Heights;
  • and March 21 at Holy Ghost Orthodox Church (Bulgarian Patriarchate), Sterling Heights.

The COCC (http://www.coccdetroit.com) is a 53-year-old clergy and lay association that represents various canonical Orthodox churches in metropolitan Detroit and sponsors a variety of worship, fellowship, and charitable, educational and outreach programs.
