Patriarch Daniel and a delegation of the Romanian Orthodox Church, attended yesterday’s funerals of Serbian Patriarch Pavle, in Belgrade, the Romanian Patriarchy informs, quoted by Agerpres.

After the demise of Patriarch Pavle, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR) addressed a message of compassion to the Saint Synod, the clerics and faithful of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Patriarch Pavle of Serbia was a catalyst of Orthodox unity and solidarity, as well as a supporter of inter-Christian cooperation and inter-ethnic dialog, as he constantly and firmly promoted the values of Christian faith and moral, Patriarch Daniel writes in his message. Daniel also evoked the personality of Patriarch Pavle, whom he described as a firm militant for Christianity, always ready to take note of cultural and social changes in the contemporary world, affected by crisis not just in its economic and social life, but especially in its spiritual structure. This is why he considered that the Church must be present and active in the society, to guide and help the people - a stance demonstrated especially during the wars Serbia fought in the last decade of the 20-th Century, Patriarch Daniel writes in his address.

Patriarch Pavle of the Serbian Orthodox Church passed away last Sunday, at the age of 95, in a Belgrade hospital. Two years ago, he was committed to the Belgrade Military Hospital, for various health problems whose exact nature was never unveiled by the religious authorities of Belgrade. Pavle ascended to the highest position in the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1990.
