New Somerville pastor touts modern applications for Old World teachings

Somerville Journal, MA...This is a community that has an amazing and rich heritage, said Fr. Panteleimon Klostri, who was been the pastor at Dormition of the Virgin Mary for a month. They want to preserve it and pass new memories onto their kids.

As parishioners at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church prepare to celebrate their 95th anniversary in 2011, the parish’s new pastor said he’s ready to lead the church forward, while maintaining a strong connection to the past.

“This is a community that has an amazing and rich heritage,” said Fr. Panteleimon Klostri, who was been the pastor at Dormition of the Virgin Mary for a month. “They want to preserve it and pass new memories onto their kids.”

Along with being new to Somerville, Klostri is also new to being a church leader. His first assignment out of the seminary was as an assistant at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody. The only real difference, he said, is that his new post carries more responsibility.

“My task is to proclaim the gospel faithfully and if I do that, God creates the vision,” Klostri said.

As he gets to know the community better, Klostri said long-term church projects will come from his parishioners.

“Everyone has an adjustment period and every community is different. It’s been a good adjustment. The people here are wonderful; they love this community and they’re dedicated to making it prosper,” he said.

While he is still settling in and getting to know his new parish, Klostri does have plans for some small changes. He’d like to organize a list of parishioners who want home or nursing home visits and get the church recycling. Right now, it’s just paper, but Klostri said bins for cans and bottles will be showing up next.

“I just think it’s important,” he said. “A basic Christian teaching is if there’s something you don’t need, don’t waste it.”
