Bringing Orthodox Christianity to African Americans is mission of Brotherhood and Detroit chapter

DETROIT - The first regional chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Moses the Black, a national organization of African- American Orthodox Christians, has been formed in metropolitan Detroit.

Officers of the Metropolitan Detroit Chapter are Subdeacon Robert Mitchell of St. Raphael of Brooklyn Orthodox Church, Detroit, chairman; Sharon Gomulka of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church, Livonia, secretary; the Very Rev. Roman Star, priest at St. Innocent of Irkutsk Orthodox Church, Redford, spiritual advisor; and David Adrian of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Detroit, public relations advisor.

The Brotherhood of St. Moses the Black is an Orthodox society whose mission is to bring the faith of Orthodox Christianity to African Americans and others of African descent. It was founded by the Rev. Moses Berry, priest at Theotokos "Unexpected Joy" Orthodox Mission and curator of the Ozarks Afro-American Heritage Museum, Ash Grove, Mo. It held its 13th annual conference in Detroit last year.

In his report to the Brotherhood on the formation of the Detroit chapter, Subdeacon Mitchell wrote: "Our hearts are filled with joy and gladness as we thank our Holy Father Moses for his intercession. For the scripture says, 'The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much . . . .' (James 5:16). Pray much for us as we start on this journey, that our efforts might be fruitful in this rich vineyard."

Sponsor of the Metropolitan Detroit Chapter is the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit, of which Fr. Star is president. The council is a 51-year-old clergy and lay association that represents various canonical Orthodox churches in metropolitan Detroit. It promotes inter-Orthodox cooperation, heightens the Orthodox community's awareness of its cultural heritage, and supports the Inter-Orthodox Choir and other Orthodox ministries and charities.
