COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX CHURCHES ELECTS NEW OFFICERS FOR 2008-2010

All are lay people, a first step in effort to revitalize 51-year-old organization

DETROIT - The Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit (COCC) has elected new officers for 2008-2010:

► Richard Shebib, of the Basilica of St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, Livonia, president
► Subdeacon Robert Mitchell, of St. Raphael of Brooklyn Orthodox Church, Detroit, vice president
► John Vasilco, of St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church, Redford, treasurer
► Gail Razook, of the Basilica of St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, Livonia, secretary

Richard Shebib appointed the following advisors to serve with the new officers on the COCC's executive committee:

► Nicholas Nicoloff, of St. Paul Macedeo-Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, Dearborn Heights, legal affairs
► Tom Rosco, of Sts. Peter & Paul Romanian Orthodox Church, Dearborn Heights, event planning
► Sandra Fisher, of St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church, Redford, event scheduling
► David Adrian, of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Detroit, public relations

All the new officers and advisors are lay people, as permitted by the COCC's newly revised constitution and bylaws.  They will be advised on spiritual matters by members of the Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood of St. John Chrysostom of Metropolitan Detroit, led by its president, the Very Rev. Roman Star of St. Innocent of Irkutsk Orthodox Church, Redford.

The COCC is a 51-year-old clergy and lay association that represents various canonical Orthodox churches in metropolitan Detroit.

Its mission is to promote Orthodoxy through worship, charitable, social and humanitarian efforts while sponsoring educational outreach programs and enjoying fellowship throughout the metropolitan Detroit area.

According to Shebib, the revision of the COCC's constitution and bylaws, and the election of new officers
are first steps in a long-term effort to revitalize the organization.

"We are at a crossroads," he said.

"The upcoming year will be a test of our resolve to increase the organization's involvement and visibility, not only within Orthodox community, but throughout the entire metro area, as well."
