Interfax

Moscow, January 29, Interfax – Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia expressed his condolences upon the decease of the Greek Church’s primate Archbishop Chistodoulos.

‘Indeed great is the loss of the Holy Greek Church, pious people of Greece and the entire Orthodox world,’ the patriarchal message to the locum tenens of the Athens archbishopric see Metropolitan Seraphim reads.

Patriarch Alexy said that the late archbishop was ‘an ardent preacher, a patriot and a zealous laborer on the vineyard of Christ’ and ‘a close friend of the Russian Orthodox Church’ and he will remain the same in our memory and our hearts.

Alexy II wished so that the Lord could rest his soul ‘in the dwellings of the righteous.’ ‘Memory eternal to him,’ the message reads.

The Holy Synod’s permanent member Metropolitan Philaret of Minsk and Slutsk will represent the Russian Orthodox Church at Archbishop Christodoulos’s funerals in Athens on the blessing of Patriarch Alexy, the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations told Interfax.
